FORT WAYNE, Ind. (DSFW) — As gas prices continue their slow but steady climb, Fort Wayne residents are reportedly reaching their breaking point—and their breaking point has two wheels, a battery, and a QR code.

A growing number of citizens are calling on city officials to bring back pay-per-use electric scooters from companies like Bird and Lime, citing a desperate need for affordable—and mildly thrilling—transportation options.

“I used to complain about stepping over scooters on the sidewalk,” said local resident Mark Dempsey, who lives on the north side and works downtown. “Now I’d gladly hurdle a dozen of them if it meant I didn’t have to fill up my tank again. I’m seriously considering scootering 7 miles to work. Builds character.”

Others echoed similar sentiments, with some admitting they’ve begun mapping out “scooter-friendly routes” through neighborhoods, alleys, and at least one church parking lot.

City officials have not formally responded to the renewed interest, though one anonymous staffer admitted, “We didn’t think we’d see the day where people would ask for more scooters.”

In the absence of readily available electric options, residents are reportedly getting creative.

“I’ve ordered a pogo stick,” said West Central resident Tina Alvarez. “It was either that or refinance my car. At least the pogo stick doesn’t need unleaded.”

Meanwhile, local man Greg Hollis has taken things even further. After years of neglect, he recently climbed into his attic and retrieved an old Schwinn unicycle.

“I bought it in college thinking I’d learn,” Hollis said. “Never did. But with gas at these prices? It’s time. I’ve watched three YouTube tutorials already. I’m basically halfway there.”

Not everyone is convinced alternative transportation is the answer. Some residents worry about safety, while others question whether Fort Wayne’s infrastructure is ready for a sudden surge in pogo sticks and one-wheeled commuters.

Still, for many, the math is simple.

“Gas or dignity,” said Dempsey. “At this point, I’m choosing dignity… on a scooter.”

As pressure mounts, city leaders may soon have to decide whether to reopen the door to scooter-sharing programs—or risk a full-blown pogo stick renaissance across Fort Wayne streets.
