FORT WAYNE, Ind. (DSFW) — In response to ongoing complaints from residents and visitors about limited downtown parking, the City of Fort Wayne has unveiled plans for a bold new solution: a 20-story parking garage set to rise as one of the tallest structures in the city.

City officials say the project is designed not only to dramatically increase parking capacity, but also to enhance the skyline and support continued growth in downtown activity.

“This is more than just a parking garage—it’s an investment in the future of downtown Fort Wayne,” said a city spokesperson. “We’ve heard the concerns, and we’re delivering a solution that meets demand while elevating the look and feel of our city.”

The towering structure will feature thousands of new parking spaces, aimed at eliminating the long-standing frustration of circling blocks in search of an open spot. Even more appealing to drivers, parking rates will be set at just $1 per hour—well below rates seen in comparable cities.

To ensure efficiency, the garage will be equipped with state-of-the-art high-speed elevators, allowing visitors to quickly access their vehicles or reach street level without delay. Officials say the technology will significantly reduce congestion inside the structure, even during peak event times.

Beyond convenience, city planners are touting the garage as a catalyst for economic development. With increased parking capacity, Fort Wayne hopes to attract larger events, festivals, and conventions that previously may have bypassed the city due to logistical limitations.

“This opens the door for bigger and better events downtown,” the spokesperson added. “We’re creating the infrastructure needed to support growth.”

In a nod to Fort Wayne’s growing arts scene, the city also announced plans to turn the massive structure into a public art canvas. Applications will soon open for muralists interested in transforming the 20-story exterior into a visually striking landmark.

Construction timelines and specific location details are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. If completed as planned, the garage could become one of the most recognizable additions to the Fort Wayne skyline—solving a practical issue while making a bold architectural statement.
