FORT WAYNE, Ind. (DSFW) — In an effort to combat declining foot traffic and avoid the fate of struggling retail centers across the country, officials at Glenbrook Square are reportedly exploring the possibility of bringing back a feature many longtime residents remember fondly: an indoor ice rink.
The proposed location? The current food court.
A Return to the Past
Mall representatives say early discussions have centered around reintroducing an ice rink similar to the one that once operated inside Glenbrook decades ago—a nostalgic centerpiece that many believe could reignite interest in the property.
“We’ve seen malls across the country decline into what people call ‘dead malls,’ and that’s something we’re actively trying to avoid,” said a source familiar with the discussions. “We’re looking at creative ways to bring people back, and this is one idea that keeps resurfacing.”
The ice rink, which was once a popular attraction for families and teens, is remembered as a social hub that gave shoppers a reason to stay longer and return more frequently.
Declining Traffic Sparks Creativity
Like many traditional shopping centers, Glenbrook Square has seen shifts in consumer behavior in recent years, with online shopping and changing retail trends impacting in-person visits.
While the mall remains one of the region’s primary retail destinations, officials are reportedly exploring experiential additions—features that offer more than just shopping.
An indoor ice rink could provide:
- Year-round entertainment
- Youth programs and skating lessons
- Special events and themed nights
- Increased dwell time for visitors
“People don’t just want to shop anymore—they want something to do,” said one local retail analyst. “Adding an attraction like an ice rink gives them a reason to come in the first place.”
What Happens to the Food Court?
Under the concept being discussed, the current food court footprint would be reimagined, potentially relocating dining options to smaller, distributed areas throughout the mall, given the amount of available spaces.
No official plans have been finalized, and mall management has not publicly confirmed the proposal. However, early chatter suggests the idea is being taken seriously as part of a broader long-term strategy.
Community Reaction
News of the potential return has already sparked conversation among Fort Wayne residents, particularly those who remember the original rink.
“I’d be there all the time if they brought it back,” said one resident. “That’s something you just don’t see in malls anymore.”
Others expressed cautious optimism, noting that while the idea is unique, execution would be key.
Avoiding the “Dead Mall” Label
Across the United States, malls have struggled to maintain relevance, with many closing or being repurposed entirely. Glenbrook Square’s leadership appears intent on avoiding that trajectory.
By leaning into nostalgia while offering a modern experience, the mall could position itself as more than just a retail space—potentially transforming into a regional entertainment destination.
For now, the idea remains under consideration. But if approved, Fort Wayne could soon see the return of a classic attraction—one that blends the city’s love of hockey culture with a renewed push to keep its largest mall thriving.
